It’s usually classified as a probiotic. It helps with the “good bacteria” in the gut which is sometimes eradicated by antibiotics. It is a capsule, taken by mouth during and/or after antibiotic therapy. A nursing implication is that if a person self-treats antibiotic-induced diarrhea with Culturelle, they may be masking symptoms of pseudomembraneous colitis (which can be very serious).
