Here is a little background info…My dad got his girlfriend (now exgirlfriend) pregnant last year. At the time my dad wasn’t aware that she had a drug problem until after she was pregnant. She always stole his prescribed pain pills he has and she got pills from other people. At first she wouldn’t admit to taking them and later would admit to taking them, and sometimes she said she snorted them. My dad finaly got her to tell the dr because he was afraid something would be wrong with the baby when she had her and the drs wouldn’t know what to do. They done a couple of drug test when she was born in March and they some how came back negative. When the baby was born she would always start screaming and throwing a huge fit, most of the time over nothing. She will be sitting there in her swing and or you can be holding her and she will just start screaming and you couldn’t get her to stop. She is almost 8 months old and throws huge tantrums. She will start kicking and swinging her arms and start shaking all over and tries to get away from you. She does this almost every time we try to changer her diaper and sometimes just out of the blue for no apparent reason. She also gets spooked easily sometimes, you can just be sitting there with her and start talking to her and she will jump and sometimes even start throwing a tantrum. She lives with my dad full custody and her mom gets her every other weekend and one day during the week. Anyways, my dad is trying to find out if there is some kind of pediatric specialist for babies that has drug withdrawls or whose mother has done drugs while they were pregnant. He is wanting to have some testing done and stuff by a dr. Any suggestions or answers is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your dad should really tell the peditrician that the mother used drugs while pregnant and explain to the doctor how she asks.. sometimes babies can just be like that! 8 months is about the time they get a lot of motor skills. If you’re Dad wants testing maybe get a referal to a specialist who can send you guys to get the baby a blood test to see if she has some kind of chemical inbalance, and maybe just give you guys some vitamins and stuff (natural Chelation) for the baby (which may be able to draw out a certain substance if its still possible). Personally I wouldnt worry too much unless its a big health concern to the child. Try to wait till shes older to do all that if you can. Hope i made sense to you. Good luck, and have patience with the baby! They’re still just learning and very fragile.
EdIT: Oh and another since there was drug use while the mom was pregnant, the baby may have hyperactivity, Very speech delayed and may have ADHD.
The only thing you’ll notice right now is hyperactivity, until she gets older.
I know a some close ppl whose mothers used drugs through the whole pregnancy and they were fine, they’re grown up now and already have their ideal career! So it can go either way.
If it’s been 8 months, if the baby was ever addicted, it isn’t now. Some babies are just very vocal. However, if she did do drugs, it may have caused brain damage that could have caused the baby to have a disorder of some sort.
The baby could have Fetal Alcohol, or some neurological issues related to chemical abuse – maybe autistic, or have some other issues to do with chemical imbalances.
You need to find a pediatric neurologist – or contact a mental health practitioner to start some testing. Contact the school district as well as some of the pre-school services can start quite young – services usually consist of monitoring development, and providing some inhome therapies.
