My 17 year old son was diagnosed as having mild “bicuspid aortic valve insufficiency” (regurgitation) and a patent foramen ovale. Want to get a second op ionon. Pediatric cardiologist says not to worry…check once a year. want to know difference between cardiology and cardiovascular disease. Does one diagnosis and the other treat. Very unclear. Husband was diagnosed with “trace tricuspid insufficienc” and 4.5 aortic root and 3.1 aortic valve opening. Grandfather died of sudden heart attack while sleeping and cousin diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. All blood related. Any connection? Please do not respond with “maybe it’s”…this is already so confusing. :~{

I am currently stuck in a dilemma concerning my career choice. It’s a good idea that you all know that I am 18 years old. So, here goes. Initially I intended on completing my BS and then going on to medical school in the pursuit of becoming a doctor. Primarily my interests resonates in pediatric oncology, and cardiology. Now, this is where the problem seeps in…after some “soul searching” I’ve decided that teaching is my true calling, in fact much of my personality and what I excel at bolsters a career in education, yet I find myself hesitating because of my love for science. I don’t want to have regrets later on in life that I didn’t fulfill my potential…so should I become a doctor and go through with the entire process, then teach at a university…or should I just shirk the whole doctor aspiration and focus solely on teaching? I know this was a bit lengthy, and for that I thank you for your time and help.

My daughter has a heart murmur, and she’s 4 months old. Her pediatrician basically said “not to worry”. When she was born the pediatrician (a differnt one) said that if it was still there a few weeks after birth she’d probably be referred to get an echocardiogram.
At her 4 month appt, the doctor still heard the murmur, but called for another doc to come and listen to it to review. The second doctor sort of said “oh well I can’t hear it but it’s probably nothing” (my daughter had just had shots and was screaming and crying).
They together concluded that they would not refer my daughter to cardiology.
I’m under the Illinois Health Connect insurance plan, and I’m not sure how I would go about getting her to cardiology. I think I need a referral, but I can’t get a referral from her pediatrician, because she won’t give me one. Her pediatrician is also going to a new hosp. but my appt with the new one isn’t for two months.
What would you do?

My son had a EKG done 4 days ago which showed left ventricular hypertrophy, they then did an x-ray which showed normal. They sent us to a pediatric cardiology clinic to get an echocardiogram done today. She did the echo, and when she was done she said the results would be sent to his pediatrician within 2 business days. She said there was nothing serious enough to keep him in the hospital. I asked ” So did his heart look normal? You didn’t see any thickening?” She said ” I didn’t say that, I said there was nothing serious enough to keep him in the hospital.” The cardiologist will look it over and you will get a call within 2 business days. I know I only have 2 days to wait but to a mother who has already waited nearly a week…that is forever! I am very worried about my son. I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but it did not show up until adulthood. I have read that if it shows up in childhood it is usually more serious. Is this true? What is the probability that he has cardiomyopathy since the technician said it was nothing significant enough to put him in the hospital? Please, Please, anyone who has any information please let me know. And please do not tell me to ask my cardiologist, or tell me not to trust my sons health to yahoo…. I know this. I am just looking for some insight while I am waiting to hear from the cardiologist….. Thanks.
