Hi
I am thinking of joining a nursing program, to eventually become a pediatric nurse. I have a full time job in IT, which I cannot quit because I need a regular income.

I would love to hear from anyone who has pursued nursing while continuing with their day job.

Also, pediatric nurses out there – what is it really like? I know there are long hours, emotionally draining experiences as well as a lot of joy in helping kids – but are there downsides that are not talked about much?

I am making the switch to first work at a local hospital and eventually volunteer on humanitarian missions – in the distant future though – at least 10 years from now. I love children and cannot bear to see them suffer. I want to help in my own way. Does anyone have exp. with that as well?

Sorry if I’m asking too many qns.. but I want to hear all perspectives before I take the plunge.

Thanks!

I have worked medsurg/oncology/CCU and some Peds. I have an ADN will complete my BSN in May 2012. I want a different job, any recommendations on what line I should try? I have applied for clinical manager positions in two places with home health agencies. I have not done home care so after getting me to the interview they both said “oh” well would you like to do home care, which I do not. I seem to be getting answers like ,”your only 24 or you don’t have enough experience yet.” I have a small child and currently work nights! It is getting tough.
Suggestions?

She was probably constipated for a long time but we didn’t notice it. why? bcz she used to go everyday once/twice… but HARD STOOLS… Being our first child, we thought it was normal. She’d complain of stomachache everytime and again I read toddlers get those too its normal.
Finally 3 months ago she was rushed to ER… constant peeing ……….. and UTIs.

Turns out the where the stools collect has been enlarged it’s pushing on the bladder so she’s having diffficulty peeing. Tonight only she has gone 15 times within an hour but very lil pee comes out.

Yes, she’s on miralax. It helps her but doesnt cure the problem.

ER visits, urologists, pediatritians…… have tired all of them.
XRAYS, ultrasounds.. We dont know what to do anymore.
I can go into more details what other methods we have tried… ex) laxative, took 3 peds ones, didnt make her go at alll… we were afraid she’ll throw up and get fever. but was ok.
enema, the er nurse gave her, made her go.. but hasn’t cure it.
we have given her 2 suppositries so far… 1st one worked, second one she went to bathroom too soon TONIGHT and it came out … was traumatized didnt want another one.

Hm.. sorry to make this long. I guess we ARE LOST.

I guess 1 more enema… then WATERY DIET.. no more nuggets, mac n cheeses etc… only soups veggies, watery chicken and rice etc etc…… fruits.. hmm..
problem is her diet has improved but hard to keep it EVERY SINGLE DAY..since sometimes I just go out… and even if half of her day she doesnt drink and eat properly we are back to square one.
It IS VERY STRESSFULL… …. ………

My 9 year old daughter has been suffering from abdominal pain for the last 3 months. They come is bout’s. Been to the pediatrician he did lab work and xray to rule out constipation. She typically bounces back from these episodes, but today she didn’t go to school, for other reasons. We were out and about this morning (8am) she told me mom my stomach hurts really hurts. It is always on the same spot..her belly button and entire right side. We went straight to the ER where we sat for 3 1/2 in waiting room,. when triage she told them her pain was a 10. I don’t think they believed her because she wasn’t crying. I told them she has a weird pain tolerance she broke her arm in 3 spots 6 months ago, and went back to class for the remainder of the day With out going to the nurse. The doctor came in check her urine, had her jump sent us home after 5 hours with a prescription for zantac. With high lighted orders to see GI in 1 day and ped in 1 day…hmm it is friday? She has complained of being tired all day, she came home and is asleep for 2 1/2 hours. she said her pain is about a 8 on our way home. She has no diarrhea vomiting or fever, i called Gi they cant see her any sooner( her apt is wednesday), but will put on cancellation list. Peds say wake her up and give her broth..she needs energy that’s why she is lethargic. Typically after these episodes she bounces right back, never like this. what would you do?
no she stayed home because of another reason.. i chose to keep her home

Happy 9 months to my son today! He is now 22 pounds and almost 29 inches! 75th percentile on both! Doctors were very impressed with him as has mastered many of the “advanced” skills for this age!!!!! ? Him! Advanced skills = him being able to say and identify his pet CAT! and him being able to stand unassisted for a few seconds.

Questions – 1. I breastfeed him and i nurse him to sleep at night. He wakes up 2x a night to eat. He hardly eats during the day. I try to get him to do it but he’s not been very good about it for the past month or so. This means breastmilk, formula (i supplement) and Solids. his doctor said i should stop breastfeeding at night AND stop picking him up when he cries!!! WTF?!?!?! She said to start with 15 minutes of letting him cry for this week and next week go up to 30 minutes!? What in the world?! I would never…

2. I try really hard to get bf and formula in him during the day and lots of the time that means he doesn’t want to play with the solids. I asked, just to make sure that was okay. And she said no! She said he needed to eat a lot of solids during the day – she said about 3-5 jars of baby food! Wow! Mine doesn’t do anywhere near there! i try to give him a bit of breakfast (1-2oz.. all he’ll take) and dinner (3oz+) and crackers here and there.

Have any of your peds given the same advice/suggestions?? I thought my baby didnt need to eat a lot until closer to a year? and won’t he need me less and less on his own terms at night??
