My daughter is almost 6 weeks old. She was on Enfamil Lipil for her first week. She had constant bms, about 10 times a day. Then she was on soy and lactose free formula which gave her painful gas. So then she was on gentlease until last Friday. She is now on Alimentum. I had told her pediatricians that she was allergic to milk, but they would not listen. I also told them she has acid reflux but they again didn’t listen. Last Thursday, she was screaming bloody murder for over a hour and I couldn’t get hurt to calm down. It was her feeding time, but she refused the bottle and continued to scream. I took her to an after hours pediatriciacs center at the recommendation of my pediatrician. They told me she definately has a milk allergy, acid reflux, an ear infection & a sore throat. However, my pediatrician did not allow for her to prescribe the drops for the acid reflux as they wanted to. So I took her to her pediatrician the next day & they said she didn’t have an ear infection. But they
said she does have a milk allergy and to put her on alimentum. They wouldn’t prescribe the acid drops. So my husband and I decided to get another opinion. We took her to an allergist. He said she does have an ear infection and prescribed the acid drops. Now I just spoke to her pediatrician and they are trying to say she doesn’t have acid reflux. She has constipation. Which she definately does not have. She did not have a bm on Saturday, but that was the first time ever. And she did not go because she is adjusting to the formula. And they do not believe she has an ear infection.

I would find a new pediatrician.
Have you ever tried breastfeeding?
Switch pediatricians. Any pediatrician who is unwilling to listen isn’t one you should trust your infant with. I’m sorry your baby girl is not feeling well, best of luck getting the care you deserve!
Sooooo….what’s the question?
To be honest with you, I’m sure that no one on here will give you the correct answer (besides me) You should go with your gut and do what YOU think is best for her….doctors will be doctors, but you are her mother.
Well, I couldn’t really find a question in there, but if you are looking for opinions I think you know what you have to do. Get rid of the pediatrician who keeps telling you that you and every other doctor are wrong. Find a pediatrician that listens and will accept second opinions.
You need to switch pediatricians asap. It sounds like they want a power struggle. Please try Mylicon for you baby and switch to the formula that you thought was best. The soy and lactose free formula would probably be the best. However give her Mylicon. Infants’ MYLICON® Drops, the #1 pediatrician-recommended anti-gas medicine, relieves the discomfort of infant gas frequently caused by air swallowing or by certain formulas or foods. It is safe because the drops are not absorbed into your baby’s system. MYLICON® drops are safe enough for even the newest of newborns. They’re safe enough to give with every feeding.
Switch doctors please!
If the dr can’t make up his mind about what is wrong it is time to switch to a new dr and get a fresh evaluation. Some Dr’s are just idiots and really don’t take time to listen to patients or the parents. Switching formula so often can have an affect on your little ones stomach making matters worse. Either she has an ear infection or she doesn’t, my understanding is that it is easy to tell if they do. If she is having trouble keep formula down then chances are she has reflux but most Drs are resistant on prescribing meds at 6 wks unless they are 100% sure but my boys both were on Zantac liquid until they were about 6 months old for reflux. I would go with a different Dr that will hopefully listen to your concerns.
I used to be concerned about my daughter being constipated, but my peditrician said that the only sign of constipation in infants is hard stools … not infrequent stools.
So, if your daughter is having hard stools than she’s probably constipated, if not she’s not constipated.
I would strongly encourage you to find a new doctor, one that will empathize and try to understand you and your daughters.
Good luck, I’m sorry your little one is so sick I hope you find the help you need!
Firstly you need a new doctor. Go back to the after hours clinic and see if they can refer you to someone else or if the doctor you saw also has his/her own practice.
Next is all the digestive problems. Honestly formula is killing your child, maybe the hypoallergenic formula will work and maybe it won’t but I really think you need to consider relactating. In almost all cases it is possible when the baby is under 4 months. However I won’t lie -it isn’t going to be easy. I think it’s worth it.

Find a new pediatrician–trust your instinct. It seems as though you have by taking her for extra opinions. I’d interview a few more doctors and find a new one.
Okay I can understand your frustration in regards to this situation. My best advice would be to see another pediatrician. If the doctor won’t listen to you, then he/she is not being helpful. I changed pediatricians twice before I found one that would listen and explain things clearly without rushing me, even it was the must mundane thing.
Good luck on trying to find the right formula for her, this could take some time.
What about nursing her?
At only 6 weeks old, you have an excellent shot at getting a full-supply in. It would take some work on your part, but it would do your obviously sensative daughter a world of good in the long run.
I can forward you some info to get started, if you’d like, and help you find someone IRL to help. Email me.
from what you just described I would definitely find a new doctor for her. I would use the ear infection medication the doctor gave you and really start looking for a new doctor! best wishes
Definately get a new pediatrician…..not all of them know what they’re talking about. My daughter has silent reflux, prior to getting in to see her pediatrician the after hours nurse told me to give her some Maalox – so if you’re ever without anything for reflux you could try a little bit of that to calm her belly.
I breastfeed so I can’t really advise on the formula issues, but based on everything you’ve said I would definately try to see if you can find a different pediatrician. Good luck.
you need a new doctor…
Speaking from experience, find a new pediatrician. My son had to be on Lactofree Enfamil, for he to was allergic to milk (he out grew this). He also had acid reflux, we would walk the floor for hours trying to calm him until his dr. finally discovered the problem after a weekend stay at the hospital. Even though I was upset with his pediatrician, when our second son was born we used him again. He was born April 16, 2005 and about May 31, 2005 he started having breathing problems. (quick note, he was 2 months premature) We had him to the ER, and the pediatrician the next day. I continued to call his pediatrician for I didn’t think everything was alright. On June 12, 2005 my 2 month old son died of an undiagnosed case of RSV. I believe if the pediatrician would have taken the time, he might have had a chance. Go with your gut feeling, this is your child, only you know if everything is ok. Good luck.
Definately tell your pediatrician to take a flying leap! Consider taking her to your local children’s hospital and have their gastro intestional specialist take a look at her.
We went through a similar thing with our pediatrician. He told me i was an over-reactive first time mother when I mentioned that my son would puke up nearly the entire bottle each time i fed him. He said it was spit up and that he had acid reflux at the most. Refused to allow me to sit down and show him what I was going through. A month later accused me of not feeding my son since he wasn’t gaining adequate weight. Took him to the hospital and they ran some tests and told me to give him neutramagin. Cured the issue in 2 days! No meds and he slept through the night instead of screaming day in and day out.
It never ever hurts to get a second and third opinion. You are mommy and you know you baby better then any doctor can looking at a chart and numbers.
Change pedi’s you need to find one that you can talk to and not feel that you are telling them something that they already know or don’t know. When i see my patients i always ask the mother—-”what do you think is wrong with your child?” and you know what most of the time I agree with them, no one knows thier child better then thier mother. Get her treated for what is going on right now, and talk to some of your buddies or the head nurse on the l&d floor at the hosp. and see who they recommend and like. take care. I hate to hear that your tiny one is in such discomfort.
Find a new doctor for her asap. It just hurts to think that your little one is in such discomfort.
You need a new pediatrician. One who specializes in allergies. Doctors don’t know everything. If they won’t take the time to check her out or to listen to you – you need to go elsewhere. Talk to friends, family and find a new doc. Heck – even take a trip down to the local nursery school or daycare and see who the popular doc is there.
