How Can I Get A Child Allergy Tested Privately If My Gp Refuses To Refer?

Filed in Category Pediatric Specialists

She is 3. She has severe skin reaction to egg white and suspected intolerance to wheat. She had eczema as a baby but we took her off milk and it cleared up. My GP was difficult in prescribing soya formula for her but eventually gave in.
Me and my partner have reasons for refusing to have her tested at the local NHS hospital.
We looked into going private for allergy testing and found a pediatric allergy specialist in south east London. They said i needed a referal from my GP even if i get the testing done privately.
My GP refuses to refer her saying we should use the local NHS hospital.
What can i do … where do we go from here?
I can not change GP’s since they are all pretty useless in my town and the only ones that aren’t are not taking on new patients. (My last GP was brilliant but he retired from the NHS to join the police service :~(

Under ‘Patient Choice’, a new NHS initiative, you have the write to choose where you will be treated from a selection of places, one of which must be private, so go see your GP and drop the words ‘choose and book’ into conversation – they’re obligated to let you choose from a selection of at least 6 places.

go to http://www.allergytest.co.uk the NHS is overloaded with allergy cases, waitlists are 2 years long, I think.

Talk to your health insurance directly and explain everything. They should be able to make a referal for you.

Get a different GP, but also call around to several different specialists and talk to them they might help you out.

A lot of health shops do allergy testing, Im sure if you explained to them they wouldnt have a problem doing it, as if its found she has to have a special diet, its more custom for their shop

contact the private allergy specialist and tell him you are at odds with your GP and request whatever it takes to have her there.

holland & barrett do food allergy testing, and they test all types of food except nuts. it costs around 45 pounds and they do it every month, i’m not sure if they test children but i’m sure you could find out by calling your local store

my son has anaphylaxis to egg milk nuts fish and a few e numbers too, last sunday my 2 yr old daughter whom has up until then tolerated everything, had anaphylactic shock im still waiting to get her tested, you have a right to use or not use any health proffessional you should not have to change your doctor to be refferred to a different hospital if i was you i would definitely write to some one about your doctor and get your child signed up with another doctor a.s.a.p if your daughter does have an allergy she will need better treatment in the future than she is getting right now i have seen the most extreme end of food allergies and it is not pretty if my doc was like yours idve most likely chinned him by now,

    just answered a simular question
my daughter used to break out in itchy hives for no reason
    (like really bad!),
at say 2 am, then disappear after an hour
once i waited in doc office and they disappeared before she saw him so no help there
then took her to a specia/different type of Chiropractor and she was ok for ages then
now only bad now if she eats whole wheat’ or ‘stressed’
find a recommended acupuncturist, nearby, or homeopath
it was a miracle when at 2 , she ate a burger from McD
(but veggie now) and was fine, no bad reactions
also she may need a very bland diet
all i can add different to the other advice that is good

Find a different GP. If he only wants you to go to one facility and will not listen to your wishes, then he is not practicing medicine properly. I would look to see if he is getting a kick back from that place.

move house so you live near a better hospital – if your childs health is so delicate find out which is the best hospital in europe or the world for that ailment and move there and get a new job to pay for it, i dont mean this as an insult just get the best care available for the baby, infant care is area related unfortunatly
