You can get a two year or a four year degree in nursing. The best thing to do after you graduate is to work on a general Medical-Surgical unit. While you may have learned enough in school to pass the state board exam, the experience you gain after a year or two on a Med-Surg unit is invaluable. Most hospitals will want you to have at least a year of Med-Surg eperience before they will hire you for, or let you transfer to a specialty area.

One of the students in my nursing class worked as a Nurses Aid in NICU during nursing school. When she got her RN, she continued to work in NICA and Peds.
