I am an RN who wants to get out of direct patient care work. I have nursed for three years.?

Filed in Category Pediatric Nursing

I have worked medsurg/oncology/CCU and some Peds. I have an ADN will complete my BSN in May 2012. I want a different job, any recommendations on what line I should try? I have applied for clinical manager positions in two places with home health agencies. I have not done home care so after getting me to the interview they both said “oh” well would you like to do home care, which I do not. I seem to be getting answers like ,”your only 24 or you don’t have enough experience yet.” I have a small child and currently work nights! It is getting tough.
Suggestions?

Get a pharmacy tech license and work in the hospital’s pharmacy, or get rad-worker certified and work in the nuc. med prepping PET scans.

Do home care and pay your dues. Most manager positions have 5-10 years of experience in the exact specialty and a BSN or MSN. I have 14 years of RN experience but with out a MSN it is becoming tougher to get the management positions.

You should check in to health insurance companies in your area. All of the big name companies (Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, etc) hire nurses to do medical reviews or case management – no bedside care involved and usually the hours are daytime with no weekends or holidays.

With your experience, apply for a phone triage position in a family practice or internal medicine physician’s group. You likely won’t be “running patients” (working in the back office)- that’s what Medical Assistants are trained to do, but your knowledge and experience would be useful fielding the “medical question” phone calls.

Case manager, triage, advice nurse – but you’re up to your neck with paperwork.

    How about school nurse?
