I Have A Ba In Sociology, But Would Like To Become A Pediatric Nurse, Where Do I Begin?

Filed in Category Pediatric Associates

Do I need to get a BA in Nursing first or would I have to get an Associates first? Does anyone know of a good online school for all of this?

I just graduated in May from nursing school. Just passed my boards too for that matter.
You don’t need a BS degree to be a nurse. Just get your AS degree in nursing and it will transfer to any four year university. You can check your community colleges locally, most of them offer an Associate in Science degree. However, Their particular program will most likely have a certain list of pre-requisites. You may have most of these already but maybe not all of them. Mine required A&P 1 and 2 along with labs, Micro and the lab, etc. nutrition classes and so on. Once your acccepted and finish school your a RN. Once you get a job, then you can get certified in Pedi. You don’t really go to school to be a “Pediatric Nurse”, your a nurse who specilizes in pedi.
If you have any other quest. email me kwaters32@yahoo,,,
Oh by the way stay away from any school thats not accredited. Some employers will not reconize your license even though you have it or other schools for that matter. You would feel pretty bad if you go to school get your degree and can’t work where you really want to.
And those online schools are a joke, how are you suppossed to do clinicals online??

No you can get EITHER a BA in nursing or an Associate. There is no online nursing school as you have to do clinicals etc.

You can get either an Associate’s or a Bachelors. However, there’s no such thing as an online Nursing school. You’d need to take several pre-requisites before officially entering or being allowed admission to a nursing program. Some of those classes include Biology, Algebra, Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry. Once you’ve completed all the required courses, nursing school is 2 years minimum (for ADN degree) and is mostly hands-on clinical work. You can start by contacting your local colleges, community colleges, and even local hospitals may have a nursing program. They can send you the information you’ll need to get started. Good luck!

Most hospitals are beginning to phase out the Associate’s degree nurses (otherwise known as LPNs) so I would definitely recommend going with a Bachelor’s degree nursing program especially if you’d like to work as a pediatric nurse.
Many programs out there require anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology etc. prior to getting into the nursing program. If you happen to be switching to another university (different from the one where you got your BA from) then you might need additional prerequisites. And the university may offer online classes for these. As others have mentioned, many nursing classes are paired with clinicals so it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to do your nursing degree online entirely.
While you’re checking out the requirements for entry into a particular college of nursing, be sure to see if the college has a wait list. Some schools have a wait list (because so many students are trying to enter the nursing program) that is about 2 years +. Be sure to check what gpa and volunteering experience you need (every school is different).
What would definitely get you started in the right direction is to work as a CNA and get your basic skills down. The more experience you have, the better it’ll be for you in the long run! And you might find another field in nursing that you’ll enjoy more than peds. Best of Luck!
