In most big pediatric hospitals, a fair amount of heart surgery takes place, often on infants and children with complex congenital heart disease. In our hospital these children went to the ICU after surgery and were cared for by the pediatric cardiologists in conjunction with the cardiac surgeon. They are a pretty busy bunch of guys and gals. Hours vary depending on the number of complex cases that are in the cardiac wing of the ICU.
When they are not on-call for the ICU they see patients in the cardiology clinic and arrange for diagnostic work-ups. If a cardiologist is fortunate enough to have a research grant, some months are spent in the laboratory.
