my 4 month old has been referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist for formula related allergies. soy is severely constipating and milk-based gives her a rash. i’m wondering what to expect at her first appt. do these types of doctors test for protein allergies and if so, how? blood or skin pricks? her appt isn’t until june 19th, but i’m nervous for her already. one of my coworkers said something about a scope?! anyone had any experience with these types of specialists?

When my son was around 4 months, he was projectile vomiting, so we were referred to one of those doctors. We had to take him for a test where he had to drink that white chalky stuff, then they took pictures. Also had to do blood and urine tests. Blood test were done by skin pricks. He had a bad case of GERD. The appointment itself wasn’t so bad, just the testing afterwards.
Yes, I went to one for my son when he was around 1 month old. He had a severe milk protein allergy and was passing blood in his stools.
My appointment was pretty uneventful, since the problem was obvious – I had to bring a stool sample in, gross, but I just brought in a dirty diaper so they could do a guayac test on it and confirm there was blood in it. She did insert her finger into his rectum to check for fissures, etc, and that didn’t bother him. They did take blood from him – more traumatic for me than him probably, he screamed through that, that was hard. But they were very quick about it.
ANyways, they put him on Nutramigen formula, which you can buy at any grocery/pharmacy, but its more $$, but since the doctor prescribed it my insurance paid for it in full!!
Hi
I work in Pediatrics and I have an 8 month old son who has seen a Ped Gastro Doctor. My son had reflux and I took him there for an evaluation. I also believe that my son had reaction to milk and soy. Anyway, he did not and is fine now.
back to your 4 month old. I am unsure why they are sending you to Gastro instead of a Pediatric Allergist. The Gastro doctor will probably tell you to stop the soy if it is constipating him and switch him to a non milk and non soy based formula; these are expensive but can be helpful in your situation. They are considered Hypoallergenic formulas. ex: Nutramigen.
I would try formula switch again before anything else. Seeing the doctor is fine but I don’t think scoping him is necessary yet. I order to find out if he is allergic to things he needs and allergist to give him a skin prick. Although in babies the testing is only 65% accurate.
Just switch the formula and I bet you will see a huge difference. Ask the Gastro Doc what he thinks and I wish you the best of luck with your baby.
