Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy?

Filed in Category Pediatric Therapy

Hi, I’m a high school student and the two careers I’m looking to do are between PT and OT. Can you please give me detailed information on each/pros&cons of each? If i were to go OT, i would go with a pediatric field. If i were to choose PT, i would go with sports. Any help would be great. And if you can, any could schools in the northeast? Thanks!! (:

My mom is a pediatric occupational therapist and loves her job. She is usually employed by schools and may work with kids in the classroom or separately. She does stuff like help with handwriting, help them find a wheelchair, and stuff that helps them be independent (like eat on their own). I don’t know as much about PT, I know if I were going into either field I would choose OT. It seems like they have more options for where/what they can do in their work. My best advice is to job shadow people in each field . You may job shadow more than one person since there are so many different things PTs and OTs can do. And check out this link:

    Hey!
I love your question! Funny thing is, I’ve just recently realized what field I actually want to work in with Physical Therapy. (I’m a high school senior and I’ll be going to college next year)
I want to work in Pediatric Physical Therapy. Specifically kids with Cerebral Palsy. If any job ever looked rewarding, it’s this one.
Anyway, if you want to go with sports, you should start of with the degree I plan on getting. For my undergraduate, I plan on pursuing a degree in Athletic Training. Which is basically learning how to prevent injuries in athletes and how to make their injuries heal, etc.
Occupational Therapy is kind of cool but I much prefer Physical Therapy.
