Resources and books for hospice nursing?

Filed in Category Pediatric Nursing

I am a rather new nurse and have been working hospice since September. I do crisis care, so by the time I get to a patient they are either transitioning, or actively dying. I love my job, and am interested in any helpful information so that I can care for my patients and their families to the best of my ability. I went to the book store and can only seem to find books specializing in maternal, peds, critical care, and other “popular” nursing areas. I can’t seem to find any on hospice and palliative care. I would really appreciate and suggested readings! :)

You’re such a special individual to be doing the work that you are :) This website may have reviews about various books: http://www.amazon.com and can search ‘hospice nursing books’ or such.

There is a book called 20 Common Problems/End of Life Care published by McGraw Hill that is very detailed and written by experts in hospice. I learned a lot from reading that. You might also try The Handbook of Hospice Care by Robert Buckingham. Also, get all the materials you can from your education specialist.
Welcome to hospice care. I have been a hospice nurse for over five years, my wife has been a hospice nurse for over seven years, and my son just started working as a hospice continuous care (crisis care) nurse. We find it a very rewarding and rich work environment.
One piece of advice: Don’t be afraid to use your human resources when you encounter a problem. Call your after hours nurse when you find yourself in a pickle. Your patient will benefit and the patient’s family will see that you care enough to do something. Remember, that when you are a nurse, caring equals action. Feel free to email me with any specific question.
