First off, I am 13 years old. I love to write, so for years now I have said I am going to be a news anchor (“go into” journalism). But I hada dream I had cancer last night, it was kind of weird, but anyway, I don’t know anybody who has cancer and never have (oh wait my papa had some kind a few years ago). And I have been reading this lady, Lurlene McDaniels books over the past year, and I love them (they are about teens with cancer basically). So I was wondering if I should be a pediatric oncologist. The schooling wouldn’t be too muc hof a problem, because I am super smart, I am skipping the 8th grade. And if I wanted to do this (pediatric oncologist) could I get an AWESOME scholarship (I am talking full ride!), since I attend a TINY private school?
Thanks so much!
(I wouldn’t have a hard time being with kids, and the sad situations, I believe I have that “special” something, and the whole “blood” thing doesn’t creep me out!

Boy, that’s a really tough one to answer…. and unfortunately, only you can decide what you’re going to be.
The biggest problem you may have between now and the time you get into college is that your thoughts may change as you gain new experiences and your life plays out.
Years ago, I thought I would work with computers… building, repairing, etc.
After a few years of experiences happening, things have changed. Now, I work as a Product Specialist for a vitamin company…. and I never thought I would even TAKE vitamins because I hated swallowing pills.
As short as that story was, I still enjoy working with computers, writing, and many other things…. but this is the job that I’ve been the happiest at compared with anywhere I’ve ever worked.
My point is that just because you plan on something happening doesn’t mean it will. If it’s what you still want to do in a few years, feel free and happy to do it… I’m a firm believer in doing things that you enjoy.
My best possible advice for you is to call a university or childrens hospital in your local area and see if they have a pediatric oncologist. If they do, explain to them your interest in wanting to learn more about their education, their job functions, and what you need in order to help reach your goals and your dreams. Ask if it is possible to “shadow” a pediatric oncologist as well.
I know that is what I did when I was in highschool. I went to a local cancer center and shadowed what the radiation therapists did. It blew my mind away and I threw myself full force into learning as much as I could about the field and expertise. I graduated from the first class from a 4 year university in my state w a degree in radiation therapy. I went on to attain more education in medical dosimetry as well as medical physics. I am also now a director of cancer services and am in the process of building my 5th cancer center. I have only been out of school for 8 years….so passion is everything.
Go for it. Best of luck. If you need any help or advice, please email.
