My 15 month old son has a heart murmur. ASD, with aortic stenosis and insufficiency and bicuspid aortic valve. We have been seeing a pediatric cardio. since birth, he said he had moderate stenosis and leak and ASD (hole in the heart) would need surgery before he was 5 and antibiotics with any stitches, dental surgery, open wounds etc.. would be on coumadin, no sports, etc…and I decided after his last visit 05/08/06 that I wanted a 2nd opinion, we saw a new ped. cardio yesterday 09/19/06 and he found no ASD, VERY mild stenosis (in fact he said he prob. wouldnt even note it) and mild insufficiency. No surgery until adulthood, no coumadin, he can play any sport he wants, only needs antibiotics for dental and colon surgery. How can two drs find such different results? I am sooo happy, but it seems strange.

Maybe a third opinion would be your best bet?
Different doctors have different methods, i mean look at House for gods sake!

i would get a 3rd if i were you… i had ASD and had it fixed when i was about 10… i’m 45 now and have no problems…. good luck
You might want a third opinion. Id be confused too. The second doc may be right, and I hope he is, but a third opinion may make you feel better.
Were they both pediatric cardiologists? Ever think of a third opinion? It is not that uncommon actually for professionals to disagree. One can travel a path many ways. Keep a log, write down any abnormal symptoms and I bet you’ll find the answer within yourself!
It depends on many things. Did the new doctor do his own testing or use the existing test results? How long have they been practicing? Are they licensed Ped doctors with specialty in heart? Many issues come into play on the outcome. If this is still a concern for you, you might try a 3rd opinion and go with majority rules. A lot will depend on how you feel about the doctors. If you feel that one is better than the other or more experienced, you will probably favor their decision. Good luck and hope all turns out well for your son.
I agree that you should get a 3rd opinion. With any luck a 3rd opinion will agree with the 2nd.
because doctors use different ways of figuring out a problem..They do everything differently, like diagnosis..certain treatments..tests..it all factors in..
