‘Critical care’ can mean a couple of different things, but I’ll go with the ICU (intensive care unit) specialist.
First: four years of college, during which you cover the pre-requisites for med school (one year each of chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biology and English, and usually one year of college-level math).
Second: four years of medical school. The first two years are mostly classroom-based and in the third and fourth years you are on rotations. Some of the rotations are required, and then you can do electives. Pediatrics is a required rotation; you could try an elective in an intensive specialty, either NICU (neonatal) or PICU.
Third: residency in pediatrics. Three years.
Fourth: fellowship in intensive care. There are different programs for NICU (neonatology) and PICU (pediatric critical care), and there are some others that incorporate even more training in things like anesthesiology along with that. Basic NICU and PICU fellowships are three years each. There are also specialties like pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric surgery, which could also be interesting to you.
