What Can Cause An Infants Head To Stop Growing?

Filed in Category Pediatric Specialists

One of my twin daughters was born with “extreme molding of the head” at 2 months they found that she no longer had a soft spot, but xrays showed no fusion of the sutures, they’ve been watching the growth of her head, at 2 mon. she was in the 90%, 3 mon. the 75% and now at 4 mon. shes barely in the 50%. The dr. says her head hasn’t grown since she was 2 mon. but another xray still showed no fusion of the sutures. We’re now waiting on the refferal for a pediatric neurosurgeon but if anyone has any ideas or information i’d reallly appreciate it. I don’t know if the xrays need to be read by a pediatric specialist in this area and maybe thats the problem, btu I can’t find any info. I don’t smoke or drink or do drugs and I never have I just say that to weed out any unneeded remarks. Please help if you can.

the first month their head changes shape alot, then it slows down, my boy whos now 3 had a small head, it also was under the 50percentile, i worried bout it alot, he had a real wide fontanelle when born which needed lots of followups, im sure it will b ok, some kids have smaller heads, mine still does compared to others his age, relax, take care

I had to go through a little of the opposite with my son – the doctor’s were concerned his head was too big, he had to see pediatric neurologists and get catscans, and this and that, and it turned out that he was perfectly fine, and that his head is large because big heads run in our family. I am not a doctor and don’t want to wager a guess at any possible diagnosis, because even if I was a doctor, without seeing your daughter and her test results, my opinion wouldn’t really mean much.
My point is, just trust your doctors, try not to freak out (as possible as that is, I know, it was giving me panic attacks in the middle of the night.). Wait and see what they say, and in the meantime, enjoy your little babies. And try to stay off the internet!! It can be the most anxiety inducing thing when you start trying to make medical diagnoses on your own. (I spent way too much time doing that, and you are always reading the worst possible scenario that is probably highly unlikely.)
All you can do is wait and see, and deal with whatever comes next. Just keep giving those babies hugs and kisses and enjoying them! (I spent 3 months of my son’s babyhood freaking out about something being wrong with him, and ended up feeling like I didn’t enjoy those months as much as I should have – since you can never get them back.) I hope everything turns out for you, you’ll be in my thoughts. Good luck to you!
