What Differences Are There Between Children And Adults That Makes It Necessary To Have Paediatric Services?

Filed in Category Pediatric Services

The health care services, law inforcement and social services have specialized parts that will deal only with children/adolecents/juveniles.
I am particularly interested in finding out what young people think.

Children have different matabolisms and complications that require specialist training – especially when it comes to perscribing drugs. Not to mention that child pyschology is very different from that of adults. A special “bed-side” manner is required when dealing with children. There are also legal issues that need to be addressed – namly that the patient is not the consenting adult.

    Degrees of vulnerability.
    Bodily functions still developing.
    Specialist disease variants.
Paranoiacally litigious society leading to specialist units with special powers/rules/oversights and overseen equally fearfully…sometimes with justification; in response to modern technology and personal mobility.

Children would be terrified if they were approached in exactly the same fashion as adults. Hospitals are imposing and terrifying. They are away from home, and there’s a lot of scary looking machinery, and things they don’t understand. Having paediatrics is a way of minimising the fear, by having staff that know how to talk to children so as to reassure them, by making the wards look less terrifying by having bright colours or cartoon pictures etc. In law enforcement and social services the same things apply. Children need to be spoken to differently, and not to be afraid to say how they actually feel. It is important to meet the needs of individuals, and children and adults have different needs as groups.
