I am starting to think about colleges and careers and I know I would like to become a pediatric gastroenterologist. Besides straight up biology, what other areas can I major in? Could someone also please explain where I would go from there to complete the education and training needed to become this type of doctor? I know I would have to go to medical school and then complete a residency, but how long would this take? Thanks for your help!

If you have a medical need please consult a physician.

What should my college major be if I would like to become a pediatric gastroenterologist?

Any major that appeals that includes all the med school pre-reqs. The Med school 4 years, then gen peds residency 3 years, then a GI fellowship 2-3 years.
The first thing you should know is that most “pre-med” students never make it to Medical School, so your Major should both overlap/facilitate pre-med courses AND offer good career prospects in case you don’t make it to Medical School.
Biology is notoriously bad for career prospects. Some good Majors are:
Bioprocess Engineering
Biological Engineering
Chemical/Biochemical Engineering
Pharmaceutical Sciences
Chemistry (ACS-Certified degree only)
